No matter how hard I try, I can't quite wrap my brain around losing Dash this week.

I remember meeting him back when he was writing Sace. We had met through some friends and spent the night partying at Avenue C, somehow we wound up on Clinton street and we watched the sunrise on a rooftop... One night we were out and he went through like 15 packs of polaroid at the Hole, he was taking pictures of everything he fuckin saw. He had a great energy to him, and although I couldn't keep up with him as much as I'd have liked to, and by the time he died I'd only seen him maybe a couple times in months, it felt good knowing he was out there, somewhere... and I knew that if I'd run into him and he'd always give me a big hug and a smile.

In hindsight, he was a monumental figure to so many kids at a time when everyone was starving for inspiration. He was a fixture in our city, one part muse, one part bad influence and the rest was a mystery to me... Dash was someone who I couldn't possibly try and understand, and when I think of the shit that led him to where he is now, it makes my head hurt... All the drugs, all the chaos and crazy stories he had... Drugs have done a lot more bad than good to my friends. It makes me think and hope that somehow we don't lose any more people like him, if there ever is another like him.

You may not have realized how important you were to so many people. you left behind a city, a lot of friends, and a family that will miss you. I know I will...

Thanks for all the music, the entertainment, and thanks for the moonwalk. You were the first entertainer I can remember idolizing. I would sing your songs from the time I was 4, dancing around the house, trying to be like you. I am sorry how poorly you were treated by your father, by your family and friends, and by the media. Despite the things that you were accused of, and that you may have done, and for all the strange stunts you pulled, I always knew it was testimony to the abuse and neglect you suffered from the time you were a child until the day you died. Anyway, I still think you were a good person, you always gave as much as you could, and you cared deeply about the well being of man, and I think you blew the minds of everyone who ever saw you perform and the world is a better place because of you.

As some of you know I once worked under the great talent Stephane Sednaoui.
Stephane, among other things is an amazing photographer, legendary music video artist, and a great friend of mine. I was lucky enough to travel to the most remote and frigid regions of Tibet with for over a month while I helped him work on his upcoming epic photographic book about the country he loves so well. A work in progress for now, you might call it THE book of Tibet. With someone as talented as Stephane and with such an original eye for capturing imagery, you can bet this is not going to be another travel book. As we made our way across 2500 miles of untouched, rugged terrain, I was constantly filming the man at work. If you go to his website www.stephanesednaoui.com (which is under construction), you will see a small video of Stephane that i shot as we were standing in between the break of what was essentially frozen waves, looking out over the most indescribable vast frozen lake at about 15000 feet above sea level, and in -20 degree wind. I'll never forget so many of my days there with Stephane. Hopefully as a world community we will be able to protect this place from being culturally cleansed and over run by the Chinese government. Speak up!!

I don't normally use my blog as a political forum. Infact I don't ever use it as such. I think it's obvious who I would support for president, I think it's obvious who of the two candidates belong at the helm of America. The reason I am posting this video is because of its significance. Because today, a man who had played a major roll in almost every American military campaign in the past 25 years, someone I have never felt inclined to support, and many times disagreed with, made a statement that showed me change is possible. A republican, Colin Powell endorsed a democrat for president, and spoke out in an extremely moving way against the persecution and the racism against Muslims and Islamic Americans and internationals. With all of the accusations of Barack Obama being Muslim, all we have heard is denials. All we have heard from the media and even from the democrats is "no he is a christian" and Colin Powell has brought up the argument that I have been making for the past few months, and that is, what if he were a Muslim? What if a 7 year old American Muslim boy is sitting at home watching the debates thinking to himself HE would like to be president?

Dog Days Of Summer

Well, summer has come to a close... and I figured I'd post some pics of the last gasps of fun I managed to have before it ended...

Shannan and I drove up to Canada for Alastair and Amy's wedding... We stopped at Niagara Falls (of course) and acted like tourists... ps Niagara falls is ridiculous...

No road trip is complete without a little go-karting...

We got to the wedding which was on a Lake, the wedding itself took about 20 minutes, the rest of the time we spent swimming in the lake and laughing at Ozzy... (above)

After that we went down to Upstate New York where we had just moved in to our new house, well, barn... well... heaven really.

Jay Hanna, Tagg and Manute came up, we got some solid house work done as you can see...

I've lived in the east village on and off for almost 10 years. When I was in Highschool I spent a million nights down around avenue A trying to get in to night spots, half the time wound up passing the time smoking cigarettes, drinking and watching the crazies pour out of Tompkins Square park. Things are different now, some say for the better, some say for the worse... like all of New York, it's becoming more and more unfamiliar...
Here's to a time that I caught the last tastes of in the Lower East Side. It's hard to believe these are the same streets...

Last week I had the chance to work with a really cool crew. I was shooting the band "Honey Honey", a new band you will soon be hearing much more about... The shoot is part of a project and passion of Keifer Sutherland's... He's got his own label and takes it very seriously. One of the nicest guys and best collaborators I've worked with. He even offered to wash my car... going to take you up on that one some day Keifer!

Please Help Tibet

As someone who has been to many corners of this world, I will say that there is nowhere I've ever been that could be more foreign and more magical then Tibet. Yet the connection I feel to this place, since visiting Tibet two years ago, is impossibly powerful and real. When I see images like this one it literally kills me. The people of Tibet were more welcoming, more caring, more genuine and real, more compassionate and beautiful than any other people I've ever encountered. Whoever you are, wherever you are, please educate yourself and others about the oppression in Tibet. The crimes committed against the people of Tibet by the Chinese and the Chinese Government are unforgivable. Something needs to be done to stop the violence and long term cultural so called "cleansing" once and for all.

There are many fabled stories surrounding the green car pictured below.
I believe it was a 1985? vw rabbit gti that my friends and I had decided to make into our own rally car.
Mike and Rus picked it up for like 100 bucks, drove it home, dumping the entire contents of its interior on someone's front lawn (including the title) something that would come back to haunt them not too long after... They drove it to our friend Danny's house, which was always a safe haven for guns, cars, drugs, driving, and the combination of all of these things due to the fact that Danny's parents were never around.
Anyway we painted it Quaker State green, and the rest of the story is too long and crazy to write on the blog. Stay tuned for my memoirs in about 40 years I'll finish the story. Anyway thanks to Rus finding these old polaroids.
